“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”
James 1:5
Do you think you’re a wise person? Do others come to you for ‘wise words’? Or are you known to be the ‘happy-go-lucky’ person in your friendship/family circle? One not concerned with the future implications of their actions? Whatever way you think of yourself, here’s a wake up call and a warning. Isaiah 5:21 says “Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.” Just in case you were starting to become big-headed, the word of God says that you should never think of yourself as wise. After all, we are humans who make mistakes and bad decisions all the time.
Each and every day, we make both big and small decisions. We decide on whether or not we will go to work or stay in bed, whether or not we will bring lunch from home or buy lunch, what we will wear, which route we will take, how many sweets we will eat. Everything we do involves a decision. I’ve decided to start this blog and keep up with it as a commitment, I’ve made that decision. But how do we know which decision to make? We need wisdom - it is essential.
Since we’ve already established that we should not think of ourselves as wise, how do we attain wisdom? We must ask the giver of all wisdom and good advice. No, not our parents or guardians, we must ask God. He alone knows the best course we should take in every big or small decision. Many people lack wisdom these days and many poor decisions are made and they have to live with the consequences of these decisions. The same goes for those we have entrusted with the responsibility of running our country, wherever we reside. It’s clear that they need a whole lot of wisdom!
The good news is that we can ask God for wisdom and He will freely give this to us. He is the fountain of all wisdom and He can see the end from the beginning - who else would you need wisdom from?! You have the right man on your team. Have you ever seen game shows where there are 2 teams competing and one team has the “super brainy” guy? The rest of the team relies heavily on him to give all the correct answers. This is how we should be with God. We need to rely on Him in every situation in our lives to give us the wisdom we need. In Proverbs 3:5-6 it says this;
Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
This is the sum total of the matter. Do not depend on your own understanding but seek God’s will. You won’t be left unsure as to what decision to make. He will give you wisdom.
Today, if you need to know the path you should take in whatever area in your life, ask God, He will give you wisdom so you can make the wisest decision.
Here’s what He says to you today:
My Child, I have your days mapped out. I know everything about you but it is not for you to know everything. If you need wisdom, ask Me. I will not chastise you for asking - I will help you make the best decisions for your life. I will give you wisdom, freely.
Pray this prayer today:
Thank you God for your offer of wisdom that You freely and abundantly give. I happily accept and choose to use the wisdom You give me to make the best decisions in my life.
