“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
John 14:6
Growing up as a Christian and going to Sabbath school, this was one of the first Bible verses I learnt. I must admit, may times I didn’t fully grasp the meaning of it. To me it seemed to be saying the same thing 3 times. Why did it need to repeat itself? Why wasn’t once enough? Only as I get older I understand certain things - and this is one of them.
Only now I realise the significance of this verse. Perhaps Jesus said way, truth and life to place emphasis and that's why He said it 3 times - that’s ok to assume. However, the meaning is much deeper. In the great scheme of things, God knew that Jesus, who He is and His purpose, would be called into question at some point in the human story. This is why He needed to make it clear that He is the way, the truth and the life. Without Jesus, there is no hope of being saved, we are forever doomed without Jesus and His sacrifice. Let’s unpack this.
The Way:
At some point in our lives we come up to crossroads, indeed more than once. Here we have to decide which route we should take. We may be very decisive and immediately choose which path to go down, other times we are left confused. Both options may seem good, both may seem bad but how do you choose? Ask God - He is the Way. Cliche? Maybe, but still true. The way to an abundant life, the way to joy and prosperity.
The Truth:
This is not popular. The truth is not popular at all. It is unpopular because it inconveniences us and our human nature. We want to live life the way we want to, so we avoid the truth. Jesus is the truth. This doesn't change just because you choose not to believe Him. He didn’t say A truth, He said THE truth. There is only one truth - He is the truth.
The Life:
None of us have spent our entire lives feeling fulfilled and always full of joy and happiness. There are times we feel bored and unfulfilled. John 10:10 says that Jesus came to give us life and give it “more abundantly”. To have life abundantly is enough, but to have life more abundantly - that’s overwhelming. This means we will be fulfilled. Jesus doesn't just care about us choosing Him (the way), knowing him (the truth), but He also cares about us following Him, the life.
Here’s what He says to you today:
I am all you need. Everything you need is in Me. I am the way, the truth and the life. Don’t try to figure it all out yourself. I am here with you.
Pray this prayer today:
God, help me to involve You in every aspect of my life. I know You are the way, the truth and the life. Help me to live my life in light of these things.
